Free the Monsters - Chapter 1:

Flush with trees, greener than you could even imagine, a slight whimper hits the air. Sam leaps into action, adjusting his glasses, slinging his backpack onto his shoulder, turning his hat backward, and sprinting toward the sound.

A freshly graduated Critterologist, Sam is undecided about whether to pursue the Guardian League. Yeah, joining the Elite is the highest honor and comes with the richest rewards, but Sam really got into Critterology for the love of nature, not the other stuff.

The whimper is growing louder, and as he gets closer, he notices a patch of thornbushes, along with some camping materials with a weird logo on them. He picks one up.

"CritTech, a subsidiary of MonCor. Hmm."

The brief distraction is cut short by his original mission. The whimper is drawing closer by the second as he nears the thornbushes. It's Bandles, a hyrax-like Snuggler. Bandles has been badly injured, and the bushes certainly didn't help. "How did you end up in here?" Sam asks, picking him up gently and taking Bandles into his arms.

The whimpering begins to subside as they walk together. Though Bandles is hurt, he is thankful as they make their way out of the wilderness and back toward the academy, which also houses the Critter Care Outpost and Sanctuary.

Sam looks down at Bandles. "They're gonna take good care of you, buddy."

After getting Bandles checked in, Sam wonders if he'll ever see him again.

Though he didn't know it at the time... Bandles felt the same way.

This is just the beginning.
