Fabled Rare Tournament #3 Winner: The Spookyfish Deck Profile
Share
Guardians of Escape Land, we have a new deck list that just won the latest Fabled Rare Tournament - Spookyfish, piloted by none other than 2Lainz from the Card Game Crypt, making it the 3rd event in a row that he has taken down!

After the first event, where 0 copies of Kingjaw were played, we now have two back to back tournaments where a Kingjaw strategy has prevailed! It is hard to tell if it is going to remain on top though, as the metagame in Escape Land continues to adapt each week that goes by with players further exploring the card pool and learning some best practices to prevent the massive shark from overtaking the competitive landscape.
The breakout star of the event though has to be Hexhopper:

Coming into the tournament, the Dragon/Ghoulie strategy that performed well last event, as well as during league play, was definitely proving itself as the deck to beat. The thing about that strategy, being a reactive KO control deck, is that it has to see a lot of cards throughout the game to find answers to what is presented on the table. Often times this means spending a chunk of Action Points to draw cards throughout the game in hopes of stockpiling cards like Shadowflare, Scorchling, and Necrostag.
This dependency on a suite of answers to stay in a game, or pull ahead, means that any sort of hand reset could spell disaster for them - and it definitely did. Not only did Spookyfish play 2 copies of the fiendish frog, it also had Serpentide in its Monster suite, offering another form of a hand reset that is even harder to see coming.
For a little peek behind the curtain, Hexhopper and Serpentide were designed with the intent to punish anyone that overcommitted to card draw instead of playing to the board - which was awesome to see play out in real-time. In those matchups, you're really rewarded for committing Basic Critters to the board and keeping your slots on the table constantly riding between 3 & 4 Critters - then linking carefully to ensure you can fill the space you may have left behind. This not only keeps the Escape Points flowing, but also keeps your cards in hand floating between 4 & 5 cards.
